Why Do Women Lose Their Libido? Understanding the Science & Solutions

by Top Floor / Tuesday, 24 March 2026 / Published in Featured, Sexual Health

Difficulty reaching orgasm. Painful intercourse. Loss of arousal. As we age, countless women lose their libido and struggle with the effects. Sadly, I often see women blaming themselves or accepting it as an inevitable part of aging. What so many of us don’t realize is that most often, the root cause of sexual dysfunction in women is not mental or emotional –  it’s hormonal, and it’s certainly not irreversible.

Hormones are directly tied to our sexual health. Understanding hormonal fluctuations and the sexual imbalance they can cause is the key to determining an effective treatment path. We offer comprehensive sexual health treatments at Moxie. In order to get there, it’s important to understand your body and what it needs.

I’m Alex Foley, an Advanced Practice Provider, Women’s Health Practitioner, Certified Nurse-Midwife, and owner of Moxie Medispa. I’m on a mission to take women’s sexual health into the mainstream by empowering women with the sexual education you didn’t learn in school, providing a safe and welcoming environment to ask questions, and offering proven treatments that will revive your libido.

The Four Hormones that Drive Women’s Sexual Function

Hormones are chemical messengers in the endocrine system. Glands release hormones, and they travel through the bloodstream to tell organs and tissues how to function. Hormones regulate key processes like metabolism, mood, growth, reproduction, sleep, and energy. When hormones are balanced, the body runs smoothly. When they’re off, symptoms like fatigue, weight changes, mood swings, low libido, and sleep issues can show up.

When it comes to sexual health, there are four hormones that directly influence sexual response. They work as an interconnected system to balance your overall sexual health, and each hormone has an important role to play:

  • Estrogen increases blood flow to the genitals, which supports lubrication. It also supports the vaginal tissue elasticity, thickness, and acidity.
  • Testosterone enhances mental responses to sexual stimuli, which fuel libido and arousal.
  • Progesterone modulates desire and sensitivity, acting as a counterbalance to estrogen and testosterone.
  • DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) produces estrogen and testosterone to facilitate sexual function.

How Do Hormones Change as We Age?

As women get older, natural hormone levels shift – especially estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Major shifts tend to occur around perimenopause, postmenopause, and postpartum. Hormonal fluctuations also flare up during periods of increased stress

These fluctuations change how the body responds to intimacy. Declining estrogen leads to thinner, drier vaginal tissue and less natural lubrication, which can make arousal slower and sex uncomfortable. Testosterone also gradually decreases, which can lower desire and orgasm intensity. Progesterone tends to drop earlier and become erratic, affecting sleep and mood; when sleep and stress are off, libido and arousal tend to suffer.

The result is that many women need more time, stimulation, and hormonal or tissue-supportive care to experience the same level of comfort, arousal, and satisfaction as they did when they were younger.

Hormonal Imbalance Symptoms To Look For

As a medical professional, these are the symptoms of sexual imbalance that I see most often. If you are a woman 30 years old or older and are persistently dealing with more than one of these symptoms, I highly encourage you to schedule a consultation with me so we can talk about your treatment options:

Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance in Women

  • Low libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful intercourse
  • Difficulty climaxing
  • Mood swings or changes (anxiety, depression, irritability)
  • Fatigue
  • Hair loss
  • Unexplained weight gain or loss
  • Irregular periods (if you are pre-menopause)
  • Insomnia
  • Hot flashes
  • Acne
  • Breast tenderness

Hormone Treatment for Low Libido at Moxie Medispa

If you checked off multiple boxes, don’t worry – you’re in the right place! Moxie Medispa offers personalized sexual health treatments with proven success.

I’ll share an example. One of my patients told me she felt like her body had gone quiet — not broken, just muted. She loved her partner, her life was full, but her desire, arousal, and comfort had faded so gradually she thought this was just “what aging looks like.” After supporting her hormones and vaginal tissue health, she came back and said, “I feel like myself again. Not necessarily younger, just more alive in my own body.”

That’s the moment I’m always working toward for women: helping them reconnect with a part of themselves. If you’re ready to take the first step to reclaiming your sexual health, it’s time to learn about your treatment options:

  • O-Shot®: A localized treatment that uses platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to stimulate vaginal tissue, leading to renewed sensitivity and arousal.
  • Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT): A systemic treatment that restores levels of key hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone to enhance libido and lubrication.

Both of these treatments work wonders on their own, but true transformation comes from a combined approach. They treat all areas that are impacting your sexual health to provide a complete solution.

I offer two special treatment packages for my sexual wellness clients:
